Why does Lyme disease occur?
The bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and, rarely Borrelia mayonii are responsible for Lyme disease. Through the bite of infected ticks, it is transmitted to humans.
Who is exposed to Lyme disease?
A tick bite can happen to anyone. However, those who spend a lot of time outside in grassland, forested areas are more prone to Lyme disease. This includes travellers, hikers, and people who handle greenhouses and playgrounds. Ticks become active in the spring and summer, so that’s when most people are at risk.
What are the symptoms of Lyme disease?
Symptoms typically include a rash, fever, headache, and discomfort. The infection, however, can spread to your joints, heart, and nervous system if it is not treated immediately. Early symptoms occur within one month after an infected tick bites you. The signs and symptoms of Lyme disease can include: A rash that looks like a bull’s-eye on your skin, at times you’ll see the classic rashes, and sometimes it appears as a large red patch.
The majority of tests examine for antibodies that the body produces in response to infection. Several weeks may pass before these antibodies are developed. Even if you have Lyme disease, a test taken right away might not confirm that you are infected.
How to treat Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection, and antibiotics are the proven treatment. How you are treated will depend on how severe your symptoms are. The earlier you start treatment, the more likely you will recover completely and quickly. Considering the fact that most of cases may be recovered with a 2- to 4-week treatment of oral antibiotics, patients can occasionally experience pain, exhaustion, or trouble thinking for more than 6 months after completing therapy. The term for this syndrome is Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS).
How to prevent Lyme disease?
Taking precautions to avoid tick bites can greatly reduce your risk of getting Lyme disease. Be sure to check for ticks after being outdoors in wooded areas, on hiking trails, or during other outdoor activities.
